Emergencies, hospitals and who to call
The numbers to save, what to carry, and how hospitals work for foreigners.
Numbers to save now
- 1669: ambulance and medical emergencies
- 191: police
- 1155: Tourist Police (English spoken)
- 199: fire
- 1178: immigration call centre
Carry with you
- A photo of your passport photo page, visa stamp and latest entry stamp.
- Your insurance policy number and the insurer's 24-hour line.
- Your blood type, allergies and an emergency contact, in your phone's medical ID.
Hospitals
Private hospitals have English-speaking staff and will usually want a deposit or insurance guarantee before treatment that isn't an emergency. Government hospitals are much cheaper but busier. Know your nearest private hospital before you need it.
Register with your embassy
Most embassies run a free registration so they can contact you in a crisis. For Americans it's STEP (step.state.gov).
